Before we start... This guide is written to be a very simple slice of Persona 4: Arena. It does not cover many aspects of the game that you need to study in order to play it effectively. It is a character introduction which you can use to look at all the available characters and choose your favorite based on their gameplay. Yu "the Hero" Narukami

Pros:

  • Long range normals, great for spacing and pressure at medium range.
  • Excellent oki and mixup utilizing his Persona.
  • Capable of high damage combos

Cons:

  • Not the greatest at long range/full screen.

Goal:

  • Stay at medium range until you land a hit, then cause a knockdown and then mixup with Persona attacks.

Yu in this video sticks to the knockdown + Persona oki tactic, forcing the Labrys to take damage just to escape the situation.

High level players to look out for:

  • Kasumi LOVE

Yosuke Hanamura

Pros:

  • Fastest character in the game!
  • Fast pokes and amazing pressure with his normals
  • Amazing hit and run ability thanks to projectiles and long range Persona attacks

Cons:

  • Low health
  • Overall below average damage

Goal:

  • Use your long range Persona abilities along with your speed to get in, mix up, land a combo, then get out.

Yosuke uses his speed as well as his fantastic hit and run ability to stay out of range of Kanji and pester him into making mistakes.

High level players to look out for:

  • Hayashi
  • Nise Pachi

Chie Satonaka

Pros:

  • Amazing normals and faster than average movement
  • Persona attacks create some of the best oki in the game
  • Has a variety of great pressure and mixup tools available

Cons:

  • No real options other than Super at full screen

Goal:

  • Get on top of them and land a knockdown, then use your Persona to mix them up and reset the situation.

[ Match starts at 3:54 ] Chie uses her fast attacks to keep Mitsuru locked down, then performs tricky oki with the help of her Persona.

High level players to look out for:

  • SpinKing
  • STD
  • Ayashiro
  • Theodore

Yukiko Amagi

Pros:

  • Awesome zoning and long range game
  • Capable of creating unblockable situations with fire attacks
  • Decent oki even at full screen

Cons:

  • Heavy dependancy on her Persona
  • Low damage capability

Goal:

  • Keep the opponent at a distance and pester them. Then capitalize on their mistakes and go for a knockdown and setting up a flame trap.

[Match starts at 3:32] In this matchup Yukiko starts off with a strong zoning game only fighting in close with Yu is pressuring her. She also uses her unblockable fireballs in the corner for garanteed damage.

High level players to look out for:

  • Stunedge
  • Himajin

Kanji Tatsumi

Pros:

  • Incredible damage output
  • Highest Health in the game
  • Amazing R-Action attack

Cons:

  • Slow Mobility and attacks
  • Struggles with fighting zoning characters

Goal:

  • Paralyze the opponent with either your R-Action or Lightning, then get in and mix them up or land a command grab.

[ Match starts at 5:00 ] Using his lightning attacks, Kanji paralizes Labrys then closes the gap, using the advantage to start up his mixup game.

High level players to look out for:

  • PET
  • FAB
  • Hima

Naoto Shirogane

Pros:

  • Great zoning with gun attacks and traps
  • Good normals and Persona attacks for pokes and pressure
  • Unique instant kill mechanic

Cons:

  • Lower than average health
  • No real wakeup options or answer to oki

Goal:

  • Keep opponent at range and plant traps, forcing them to come to you and getting hit in the process. Then apply pressure and carry them to the corner for you highest damage combos.

[ Match starts at 12:07] Using her traps, Naoto keeps Mitsuru at long range where she's weakest, eventually leading her into the corner for massive damage.

High level players to look out for:

  • Naru

Teddie

Pros:

  • Great normals with decent range
  • Constantly keeps opponent on their toes due to item drops

Cons:

  • Slower mobility
  • Very Persona dependant
  • Somewhat low damage capability outside of the corner

Goal:

  • Use items to cover yourself as you get in close to attack, then land a combo ending with a knockdown and an item throw to keep the opponent playing defensive.

[Match starts at 6:11] By utilizing the good range on his normals and the pressure of item drops, Teddie is able to play a long range game against the best zoning characters as well as keep them guessing in close.

High level players to look out for: 

  • souji
  • Keita

Aigis

Pros:

  • Fantastic zoning ability
  • Amazing air normals
  • Insane movement, pressure and damage while Orgia is active

Cons:

  • Forced to play defensive while Orgia is cooling/inactive
  • Slightly lower health than average
  • Limited Persona abilities

Goal:

  • Play a defensive and zoning based game until Orgia is activated, then rush down and mixup non-stop.

[Match starts at 9:30] Playing a defensive keepaway style until Orgia is activated, Aigis then rushes down Mitsuru, using her air attacks to keep pressure.

High level players to look out for:

  • Yume
  • Eito

Mitsuru Kirijo

Pros:

  • Good range and damage with normals
  • One of the best DPs in the game (R-Action)
  • Great frame traps

Cons:

  • Limited mixup options outside of instant overhead
  • Rather straight-forward and easy to read

Goal:

  • Rush down the opponent and use your pokes and specials to frame trap the oppoenent and land a combo.

Using her insanely fast pokes, Mitsuru constantly applies pressure on Yu, including using some really nasty frame traps.

High level players to look out for:

  • DieCHAN
  • GO1
  • P3UPlayer

Akihiko Sanada

Pros:

  • Capable of high damage
  • Great Pressure

Cons:

  • Slow Persona attacks with limited use
  • Struggles with fighting zoning characters
  • Often uses R-Action mid combo resulting in taking blue damage

Goal:

  • Stay in the opponent's face, giving them little breathing room and pressure them into blocking wrong, then go for a high-damage combo.

[Match starts at 8:14] Using his high pressure attacks, Akihiko locks Yosuke down, dealing out high damage combos in the process.

High level players to look out for:

  • REO

Elizabeth

Pros:

  • Fantastic zoning range
  • Solid mixups with Persona attacks
  • Able to inflict Fear status and deal insane damage
  • Constantly building free super meter

 

Cons:

  • Slow Mobility
  • Lowest health in the game!
  • No real anti-pressure options once an opponent is in close
  • Heavily dependant on Persona

Goal:

  • Keep the opponent pressured from a distance then land a combo that inflicts Fear.

[Match starts at 7:46] In this match the Elizabeth keeps their distance then manages to inflict Fear, resulting in steamrolling the Chie with high damage combos.

High level players to look out for:

  • Hazure Metal

Labrys

Pros:

  • Good range on normals
  • Capable of dealing high damage if conditions are met

Cons:

  • Slow mobility and attacks
  • Very little oki abilitiy outside of Persona attacks
  • Has to constantly keep pressure or else damage capabilities go down
  • Overall not very damaging unless Axe status is Yellow or Red

Goal:

  • Pressure the opponent from close range to level up your Axe status. Then use your Persona to pressure them further on wakeup.

Labrys uses non-stop pressure to level up Axe status to Red, using her Persona for oki on wakeup.

High level players to look out for:

  • Tomo

Shadow Labrys

Pros:

  • Good range on normals
  • Good space control and mixups with Persona attacks

Cons:

  • Slow mobility and attacks
  • No real answer to in-close pressure
  • Very easily Persona broken

Goal:

  • Use Persona attacks to control space and put the opponent on the defensive, then go in for a mixup and use delayed Persona attacks for oki.

[Match starts at 6:30] Shadow Labrys uses her Persona to keep Naoto from setting up traps, then uses her Persona for some nasty oki.

High level players to look out for:

  • Reria
  • Bananaken
